The 'Unmask Palm Oil- What's on your Plate?' workshop
This workshop was held at Auckland Zoo on Saturday September 1 from 10.00am 'till 3.00pm. When we arrived there we got to see what other schools were doing to raise awareness about palm oil and we got to share what we were up to as well. Emma F got to go and see the Sumatran Tigers and they were absolutely AMAZING! They were literally in a cage 1m away from her! Sumatran Tigers are another animal besides the orang utan that is affected by Palm Oil influenced deforestation and it's sad to think that an animal as majestic as this has it's natural habitat being burned and cut-down at a rate of 54 rugby fields per HOUR! Jaymie and Emma H got to go into the orang utan feeding enclosure and also their outside enclosure! The apes were very mischevious and amazing to watch, according to them.
We also got to hear from people who had first hand experience in countries such as Sumutra, and they were very inspiring to listen to!!! Ben Dowdle, the NZ CEO of 'Unmask Palm Oil: demand Labelling' spoke to us about the importance of mandatory labelling on products that contain Palm Oil. He also spoke to us about how to create a campaign that gets people entertained, persuaded, and interested in our cause!!
Over the course of the day, we participated in several workshops, including one where we had to place people in different groups according to their opinions, and think of ways to get the people in each group involved with our cause. The four groups were the 'not willing or able' AKA the 'disconnected', the 'able but not willing' AKA the 'shirkers', the 'willing but not able' AKA the 'enthusiasts', and the 'willing and able', AKA those 'in action'.
Overall, we learnt heaps at the workshop, and had an unforgettable experience with the animals that made our cause so much more personal!!!
